Asher's Bar Mitzvah service will be held at Or Hadash in Fort Washington. This is a Reconstructionist Synagogue. Learn more about Reconstructionism at About Reconstructionism | Or Hadash. This is significant to Asher since his great-grandparents, Dr. Sid Altman and Barbara Altman were one of the six founding families of the Synagogue in 1983, and Sid was the first President. Asher will also be the first member of a fourth generation of a founding family to be a Bar Mitzvah at Or Hadash. The building itself - The former Cadwalader Mansion - has quite a history and was purchased in 1995. Learn more at From Fairwold to Or Hadash | Or Hadash.
Asher's party will take place at Topgolf in King of Prussia. When choosing a location, Asher wanted to find a place to have fun with his friends and family and play sports. Like his maternal grandfather, Dale Bennecoff, Asher loves golf. He may not yet have patience for a full 18-hole game, but he does enjoy the driving range. He looks forward to hitting a few rounds of golf balls with everyone before the dancing, games, dining, and speeches, and other fun begin!

The Torah is a parchment scroll that contains the five books of Moses - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. It is divided into 54 parashot, or weekly portions, with one parsha being read weekly.
Asher's Torah portion is called Ki Teitzei. One of the more unusual features of a Torah scroll is that it lacks vowels and punctuation (unlike the prayer books, the Siddur) - making Asher's task of reading from the Torah all the more challenging!
The Ark is an ornate cabinet that houses the Torah scrolls and is the central object on the bimah—the platform at the front of the sanctuary. Out of respect, the community stands while the ark is open, in spirit or body.
A kippah (a head covering) was traditionally worn only by men. However, at Or Hadash and many other egalitarian synagogues, everyone is welcome to wear a kippah. During the service, many Jewish adults will additionally wear a tallit (prayer shawl).
A tallit is a large rectangular shawl made of wool, cotton or synthetic fibers. In each of the four corners of the shawl are strings tied in a particular pattern, called tzitzit. The corner fringes on this ritual garment remind the wearer of all the commandments in the Torah. You will see Asher hold all four corners of the tallit as he reads from the Torah. Interesting fact: Each of the fringes contains 8 threads and 5 knots, making a total of 613. This number corresponds to the 613 commandments contained in the Torah.
