A Mitzvah Project is a significant part of the Bar Mitzvah process, marking a Jewish child's transition to adulthood and responsibility by engaging in acts of service and fulfilling the Mitzvot (commandments), particularly Tikkun Olam (repairing the world).
It's crucial because it fosters personal growth, reinforces Jewish identity and values, encourages community engagement, and allows for a meaningful expression of gratitude for reaching this milestone.
Asher's Bar Mitzvah falls during the week of Parashat Ki Teitzei. This Torah portion contains more commandments than any other in the Torah — 74 in total! Many of them focus on how we treat people who may be vulnerable or in need.
For example, the Torah teaches us not to take advantage of the poor or the widow, and not to ignore someone struggling with a burden. One powerful verse says: "You shall not ignore" (Deuteronomy 22:3) — in Hebrew, “Lo tuchal lehit’aleim.” It reminds us that we have a responsibility to see others and to act when they need help.
Sports have always been a big part of Asher's life. They taught him confidence, teamwork, and perseverance. However, he has learned that many kids — especially those with physical or developmental disabilities — don’t always have the same chance to play.
For his mitzvah project, he decided to support programs that help disabled youth participate in adaptive sports, by volunteering with the Whitpain Recreation Association's adaptive sports leagues. In addition, to volunteering, he is helping raise money for specialized equipment.
Asher enjoys seeing the joy these children experience through sports, and it reminds him that sports should be for everyone — not just those who are able-bodied. Just like in Ki Teitzei, we are reminded to stand up for others and create opportunities where there were none before.

This fall, Asher will be assisting with the Whitpain Recreation Association's TOPSoccer program.
TOPSoccer is a community-based training and team placement initiative designed for young athletes with disabilities. The program aims to provide the opportunity for boys and girls who face mental or physical challenges to learn and play soccer.
